Liminal Performance Group: About
Bryan

Bryan Markovitz

Co-founder, director

Poetic:

But Bryan Markovitz will say he is dissolving situations into matter and matter into situations. This is feeling. Thus he is fragmenting and circumstance. Not fixed to a time but all time will do. Not fixed to a perspective but all perspective is possible. So call it performance. Or say installation. Maybe object. But breathing always. And so he operates in a hermetic fashion. And yet he operates in an open fashion. And there is history. Ohio. Texas. Oregon. Illinois. New York. And he co-founded a group. It is Liminal. Thus he directs Liminal productions. Something like theater. So he won awards from theater critics. And so there is desuetude. And yet there is reviving. And there is the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. And there is Trinity University. This is MFA and BA. Credentials. There is support for his projects. This is foundations and public sources and people. And he is thankful.

Prosaic:

Bryan Markovitz makes art from the intersection of social circumstances, objects and theatre. The result is like a series of mirrored drawers, each opening to reveal another. He uses a variety of media to construct his work, from live performers and musicians, to public spaces and spectators, to everyday objects and drawings. In 1997, Markovitz co-founded Liminal Performance Group in Portland, Oregon. He has directed more than a dozen Liminal productions and received three Portland Drama Critics Awards for his directing and design. Markovitz holds a masters degree in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a bachelors degree in theatre from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Through Liminal and individually, Markovitz has received support for his projects from several foundations and public sources including the Flintridge Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, the City of Chicago and the Regional Arts and Culture Council of Multnomah County.
